AFRICAN ARTS

Image
In 1943, tin mining in the vicinity of the village of Nok near the Jos Plateau region of Nigeria brought to light a terracotta head, evidence of the oldest known figurative sculpture south of the Sahara. Although stylistically related heads, figures, animals, and pottery shards have been found in a number of Nigerian sites since that time, such works are identified by the name of the small village where the first terracotta head was discovered. Artifacts continue to be unearthed without documentation of the context in which they were buried, a lack of extensive archaeological study that has severely limited our understanding of Nok terracottas. One of the earliest African centers of ironworking and terracotta figure production, the Nok culture remains an enigma. Most Nok sculpture is hollow and coil-built like pottery. Finely worked to a resilient consistency from local clays and gravel, the millennia-long endurance of these ancient objects is a testament to the techn

THE BASIS OF ART

Image
There are several ways you could go about defining art, but my suspicion is that one will get you better results than the others. I could tell you that art plays a large part in making our lives infinitely rich. Imagine, just for a minute, a world without art! (You may think "So what?" but please consider the impact that lack of graphics would have on your favorite video game.) Art stimulates different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between.

It’s no news that the fashion industry loves talking about trends whether the retro fashion trends or the futuristic. While this may have a way of affecting our sartorial focus, the fact remains that the New Year always comes with a lot of trend prediction and this year is no different as we intend looking at trends that might likely shape the fashion year. The fashion trends of last year have been clearly established. From the runway to the red carpet, inspired fashionistas in Nigeria rocked each seasons hottest trends with gusto. So what will we actually want to wear this year? As always, the Lagos Fashion Week and the end of New York Fashion Week brings with them the inevitable forecasting of next years biggest fashion trends and this year is no different. Several designers showed pretty, edgy, groundbreaking, inspiring and totally wearable looks that we cant wait to get our hands on. While it ís still too early to tell which styles the masses will take to, there

women personality tips

Image
Before anything else… understand that a big chunk of style depends on a confident  attitude . Self-confidence doesn’t just help you engage with men. It’s an internal driving force for remembering who are you are, what you stand for. When you’re in sync with your sense of purpose, it sends a strong signal that affects the “aura” you give off – and even the clothes you wear. So how do you build that confidence? Start by learning from a good mentor. An older babe who exudes confidence the second she makes eye contact with anybody (without coming off as arrogant). Aside from that, master the art of power posing whenever you lack self-confidence. You’d be surprised by how much simple actions like the “ Superwoman pose ” can benefit us mentally.

Entering the real world – you’ve got to open your eyes to the inconvenient truth:  books are always judged by their covers. Appearances do matter. Especially when it comes to first impressions. Isn’t a good personality still important? Absolutely. But some people won’t ever be exposed to it if they can’t see past your lackluster “cover.” To nail first impressions, your style and image have to work within society’s system of what’s acceptable – what’s expected of young professionals. You want to dress in a way that can easily grant you those precious seconds to sell a thought, make your case, and influence others. That means you must stick to crisp, clean, and well-fitted clothing. That’s what encourages people to take you more seriously. Any young doctor, lawyer, consultant or salesman needs to understand this. It also matters to  dress appropriately for your age . If your wardrobe screams “student” or “teenager” – you’re going to be treated like you’re still a k

A series of photographs taken in the slums of Lagos shows the faces of sex workers living in squalid conditions. And the images have a tragic undercurrent, with tens of thousands of people in the sex trade diagnosed with HIV each year, and millions dying from AIDS across Nigeria . A survey conducted last year has also highlighted that attitudes towards condom use is helping the spread of the condition, and research suggests that nearly a quarter of Nigerian sex workers have HIV.

Considering how much of an important part fashion plays in the lives of millions, the specific psychology of it is a relatively new field of research. But at the beginning of the year, one can't help thinking of wardrobe clearouts , style-overs or simply getting that workwear closet in good shape . So is your actual wardrobe giving off signs (good or bad)? We drilled our most knowledgeable source for fashion psychology, Dr. Carolyn Mair, a chartered psychologist who, as the London College of Fashion's reader of psychology, has established the world's first courses for this subject at the school. Using empirical evidence, there are conclusions that can potentially be drawn from that pile of clothes languishing on your floor or the fact you keep original designer hangers. "There are many potential problems with buying clothes every time you see something you like," Mair tells us. "One of them is the scenario above. Although this person really enj
